New Grants Approved and Implemented
The goal of Foundation fund-raising events is to support activities that enhance, enrich, and supplement instructional opportunities for the district’s learners. The Foundation approved nine Spring 2007 Innovation Grants for implementation this school year.
Junior High Art teacher Adam Zbydnowski requested funds to purchase a pottery wheel, clay, and clay tools, as well as providing for a visiting artist to work with the students. Science teacher Randi Scalf was granted funding to rent the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Starlab as well as supplemental reading materials to go along with the lab. The lessons will go across the curriculum as Social Studies teachers will also use the lab to teach Native American culture. The junior high library will soon be enhanced with a listening center. Their grant will purchase 18 audio books for use in the center. Lastly, the junior high special education teachers were granted funds to buy equipment to provide for an after-school Game Club for students with special needs. The club will give these students the opportunity to develop positive social skills.
High school teachers Paul Shircliff and Rita Wovna were granted funds to purchase Kreative Komix Fairy Tale & Super Hero software which will help their students improve their creative writing skills. The comic/graphic novel which will be the eventual product of these science and social studies students will be published in print as well as on the Buckeye website.
York Elementary teacher Becky Flanagan requested a grant to provide two site licenses for FASTT MATH, which promotes student learning by using adaptive technology to customize the learning experience based on student needs. This program enhances the current math program, focusing on the memorization of math facts.
In addition, York and Liverpool Elementary Schools were granted funds for Emergency To-Go Bags, and the high school was granted funds for a Cultural In-Service for the staff.
